We need exponential entrepreneurs, we need a bold education

Everybody knows that the world has changed and will continue to change. But now, change is happening in an exponential rate.

I am taking the first online delivered course by Singularity University. This is not a traditional University. It doesn´t has undergraduate or graduate programs. It has programs with the mission to educate, inspire, and empower leaders to apply exponential technologies to address humanity´s grand challenges.

Singularity University was founded by two visionaries. They have an impressive curriculum.  It is important to say that they are recognized futurists. Ray Kurzweill found that the “Moore Law” is applicable to anything that gets digitalized, doubling its power and being cheaper in a specific period of time. Based in that, he has made predictions that has been very accurate. Peter Diamandis found that this exponential growth has 6 phases that he called the six Ds. The second phase is "deceptive", a phase that takes times and makes people think that a specific technology is not going to be viable. That bias, for example, didn´t allow Kodak executives to see the change that was coming in digital photography.

To follow Singularity University or to take a course with them changes your mindset. They say it is an exponential and informed mindset and I agree. This mindset allows people to see the impressive future that is very near. For people that has entrepreneurial skills, it is a call to action to solve humanity challenges. For others, is a call to develop skills to live in a very different world.

Today, there are a lot of technologies that are growing at an exponential rate and they are converging. There is well documented evidence that they can solve humanity problems but there are barriers that can slow down the pace. So, it is important to identify political, societal, technological, economic and environmental issues and act in consequence. There are risks related to new technologies, there are ethical issues, and there will be problems in the transition to a world of abundance. That is the reason there are needed entrepreneurs and the reason there is a need to change the mindset of CEOs of companies.

I have started to talk with my customers about projects with exponential technologies that brings innovation and make them more competitive. But it looks that current available talent is not enough for the requirements of the market. And it isn´t enough for solving global grand challenges. It would be useful to develop people along with companies that want to innovate.

For those reasons, I think that education needs to change also in an exponential rate. It must be redesigned to develop more leaders that think exponentially. We should change the mindset of people. They need to develop skills to solve future problems with creativity and collaboration, using critical thinking and learning by themselves. We need more entrepreneurs to help solve the world problems. We need that people adapt to a new era, and learn to live better in our society.

I think the mindset being taught by Singularity University needs to be extended to different levels of education, creating more entrepreneurs (and startups) in exponential technologies, developing their skills and entrepreneurial mindsets in early stages, the same way successful athletes do. It is about inspiring and influencing people to set higher goals and guide them toward technology, entrepreneurship and achievements that develop their skills.

Society needs more people more prepared to make an impact, and needs people to adapt to a new era. We need to work in that endeavor.

Necesitamos emprendedores exponenciales, necesitamos una educación atrevida

Todo el mundo sabe que el mundo ha cambiado y seguirá cambiando, pero el cambio está ocurriendo a un ritmo exponencial.

Estoy tomando el primer curso impartido en línea por Singularity University. Esta no es una universidad tradicional. No tiene programas de pregrado o posgrado. Tiene programas con la misión de educar, inspirar y capacitar a los líderes para aplicar tecnologías exponenciales para enfrentar los grandes retos de la humanidad.

Singularity University fue fundada por dos visionarios que tienen un currículo impresionante. Ellos son reconocidos futuristas. Ray Kurzweill encontró que la "Ley Moore" es aplicable a todo lo que se digitaliza, duplicando su poder y volviéndose más barato en un período específico de tiempo. Basado en ello, ha hecho predicciones que han sido muy precisas. Peter Diamandis encontró que este crecimiento exponencial tiene 6 fases que él llamó las seis Ds. La segunda fase es "deceptive” (engañosa), una fase que toma tiempo y hace que la gente piense que una tecnología específica no va a ser viable. Ese sesgo, por ejemplo, no permitió a los ejecutivos de Kodak ver el cambio que estaba llegando en la fotografía digital.

Seguir a Singularity University o tomar un curso con ellos cambia tu mentalidad. Dicen que es una mentalidad exponencial e informada y estoy de acuerdo en ello. Esta mentalidad permite a la gente ver el futuro impresionante que está muy cerca. Para las personas que tienen habilidades emprendedoras, es un llamado a la acción para resolver los desafíos de la humanidad. Para otros, es un llamado para desarrollar habilidades para vivir en un mundo muy diferente.

Hoy en día, hay muchas tecnologías que están creciendo a un ritmo exponencial y que están convergiendo. Hay pruebas bien documentadas de que pueden resolver los problemas de la humanidad, pero hay barreras que pueden frenar el ritmo. Por lo tanto, es importante identificar las cuestiones políticas, sociales, tecnológicas, económicas y ambientales y actuar en consecuencia. Hay riesgos relacionados con las nuevas tecnologías, hay cuestiones éticas, y habrá problemas en la transición a un mundo de abundancia. Esa es la razón por la que se necesitan emprendedores y por la que hay una necesidad de cambiar la mentalidad de los accionistas y directivos de las empresas.

He empezado a hablar con mis clientes sobre proyectos con tecnologías exponenciales que les aporten innovación y los hagan más competitivos. Pero parece que el talento disponible actual no es suficiente para los requisitos del mercado. Y no es suficiente para resolver grandes desafíos globales. Sería útil desarrollar a la gente junto con las compañías que desean innovar.

Por esas razones, creo que la educación debe cambiar también en una tasa exponencial. Debe ser rediseñada para desarrollar más líderes que piensan exponencialmente. Debemos cambiar la mentalidad de la gente ya que necesita desarrollar habilidades para resolver problemas futuros con creatividad y colaboración, utilizando el pensamiento crítico y el autoaprendizaje. Necesitamos más emprendedores para ayudar a resolver los problemas del mundo. Necesitamos que la gente se adapte a una nueva era, y aprenda a vivir mejor en nuestra sociedad.

Creo que la mentalidad desarrollada por Singularity University necesita ser extendida a diferentes niveles de educación, creando más emprendedores (y startups) en tecnologías exponenciales, desarrollando sus habilidades y mentalidades emprendedoras en etapas tempranas, de la misma manera que los atletas exitosos. Se trata de inspirar e influenciar a las personas para que se fijen metas más altas y las guiarlos hacia la tecnología, el emprendimiento y los logros que desarrollen sus habilidades.

La sociedad necesita más gente preparada para hacer un impacto y necesita que la gente se adapte a una nueva era. Necesitamos trabajar en ese esfuerzo.
